What is EXIF Data?

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is metadata embedded in photos by cameras and smartphones. It records technical details about how a photo was taken, including camera model, lens, exposure settings, date and time, and GPS coordinates.

This tool reads EXIF data directly from your photo files and displays it in an organized, readable format. Everything runs in your browser - your photos are never uploaded to a server.

  • Camera make, model, lens, and software used
  • Date and time the photo was taken (DateTimeOriginal)
  • Exposure settings: shutter speed, aperture, ISO, focal length
  • GPS coordinates and altitude (if available)
  • Image dimensions and orientation

Frequently Asked Questions

What photo formats are supported?

The EXIF Viewer supports JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, and HEIF image formats. HEIC and HEIF are the default formats used by iPhones and iPads.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. Your photos never leave your browser. All EXIF parsing happens locally on your device using JavaScript.

What EXIF fields can I see?

The viewer shows camera make and model, lens, date taken, exposure time, aperture, ISO, focal length, flash, GPS coordinates, altitude, image dimensions, orientation, and many more technical fields.

Why do some photos have no EXIF data?

Photos may lack EXIF data if they were screenshots, downloaded from social media (which often strips metadata), edited by software that removes metadata, or taken with a camera that does not embed EXIF.

Can I edit the EXIF data?

This tool is read-only. To edit GPS coordinates, use our Photo GPS Editor. To edit dates and times, use our Photo Date & Time Editor.

Does this work with iPhone HEIC photos?

Yes. The tool reads EXIF data directly from HEIC and HEIF files, the default photo formats on iPhones and iPads.
